Are you one of those waiting to welcome a baby but you don’t have a spare room in the house for the baby? Most parents in our society don’t prefer a separate room for the baby. However, keeping the baby in your own room requires a whole lot of restructuring. We often don’t realize how much room a small baby takes. Their clothes, their toys, their cot, diapers, and play stuff, there is so much that needs to be adjusted before the baby arrives. And in the end, the room ends up looking messy, cluttered and untidy. You need to plan it out smartly.
If you don’t have a lot of space but are able to spare one corner or part of your room for the baby, we are here to help you with the essential items you need and how you can set it up in minimal space. These tips will help you prepare for your new baby even in little space and will also suggest how you can reuse the space as the baby grows.
Buy a Portable Cot
The first thing you need to do if you want to save space is to buy a portable cot. These type of cots or bassinets are easily movable, light-weight, can get attached to the side of the bed, and are easily foldable. They look much neater than having a full-size cot in the room, which looks spacious and is usually a permanent part of the room furniture. These portable cots/bassinets usually last up to 18 months for the babies. So, once the baby is starting to outgrow it, you can replace it with a floor bed. Floor beds are safest for toddlers as it prevents them from climbing out of it and the risk of falling. A portable cot will be a good buy as you can use it and then fold it to keep it away.
Use Wall Décor
To distinguish the baby’s side and make it look like a baby corner, use some wall décor items such as hangings, paintings, or frames of baby’s hand or footprints after they are born. This gives a cute element to the corner that the baby can also enjoy. You can also use balloons or different colored crafty items such as hanging paper fans to engage the baby as well. You can also use different types of lights or lamps for this corner as babies love to see and follow light. Painting the wall is also a great idea to distinguish the corner and give it a feel. Use bright colors so that the baby enjoys them too. You can later use this wall as a backdrop for baby pictures. Set up the bassinet in this corner in front of the wall and it will give a cute wholesome vibe.
Get a Storage Unit
Babies need storage space. If you don’t plan on sharing your cupboard with the baby, then we suggest you get a storage unit exclusively for the baby’s stuff. This includes clothes, bibs, socks, shoes, towels, blankets, swaddles, baby care kit, bottles, and so many more things. All these things need storage space. You can use a shelf from your cupboard for the clothes. If you don’t have enough space in the corner of the room to set up a storage unit and want to set it elsewhere, then you can put up a few shelves for baby’s toys or books.
This adds a practical touch to your baby corner. You can also set up a diaper caddy, which could be a sleek three-tier rack where you put diapers, nappy cream, wipes, tissues, lotion, and other daily use items for the baby. If you do plan on getting a storage unit, we recommend a chest of drawers with a maximum number of drawers to fit in all the baby essentials. You can then use the top of this unit for diaper related stuff or a milk station.
Use a Carpet/Mat to Define the Space
A carpet is always a great addition to the room to define the space. For example, using it under the bed defines the space of the bed and separates the room with the rest of the furniture. A rug under the coffee table and chairs defines that particular space. Similarly, you can use a rug or mat to define the corner you are preparing for the baby. It also looks cute as you can place animal shaped carpets or a foam play mat with cute characters. Since your cot is portable, you can easily move things around in this area and make it a play area for the baby in day time when they turn 6 months+.
You can set this space for the baby to use and create their mess. Babies get a sense of ownership for their space hence this will help you separate the messiness from the rest of your room.
Organize, Organize, Organize!
The only way to avoid making a mess and set up a classy corner for your baby is to organize all the stuff. For this, you need organizing equipment. For example, organizers for drawers, for diaper caddies, for shelves, for toys, for everything. Take small bins to place toys and partitions for drawers to keep them clean. For other accessories, buy organizing baskets, trays, or boxes, which can help you save space and look neat. You can always reuse these organizing materials for other things around the house.
Are you ready to welcome your baby? Use these tips to set up space for your baby in your own room. You can ensure that all the things you get complement the other furniture pieces in your room to maintain the aesthetics. Instead of having a baby all over the room, its always better to give them their space. This will also be better for you and your partner as you both will still have your own space.
