If you’re one of those people who are always on a lookout for fun activities to do with your spouse but are done with the limited outdoor options available, you’ve landed at the right place. What does a couple do when they plan a date night – a dinner, a movie or theater, a walk in the park or at the beach, or a long drive. These are the only activities and to be honest, they have become so repetitive that they are barely fun anymore. Are there even more date night ideas?
Setting aside time for yourself and your partner is more important than we think. it often gets neglected between the hustle and bustle of daily life, work, chores, and children if you have. But while everything else demands your attention, remember, so does your marriage.
If you didn’t know this yet, let me tell you. At-home date nights are the in thing! You know how it is, you get dressed to go out, you drive all the way through traffic to your location, interact with plenty of other people, are always aware of the public around you, and sometimes even run into someone you know. Your time goes into driving, parking, ordering, etc. Does this ‘public’ date really leave you two with the right space of mind where you would feel relaxed and want to talk to each other? I think we know the answer. At-home date nights take away all these stresses and lets you and your partner share an intimate space together where you can freely talk and mingle.
Let’s dive into a few simple and affordable ways in which you can turn your at-home date nights fun, creative and memorable.
Candlelit Dinner – Cook it Yourself
An intimate candlelit dinner with dim lights and soft music is the most romantic date night idea out there. And it never fails. Its always a good feeling to have a good dinner with your partner in such a setting. However, here’s the twist – cook it yourself! Cooking may not always be fun if it’s a part of daily routine for one of the partners, but hear me out. Cooking together with your partner is therapeutic. Many couple therapists recommend it! It may not have to be something very fancy. Maybe just a couple of grilled chicken steaks with sauteed veggies and mashed potatoes. Cooking together will help you bond and spend time together. If you are still not sold with the idea of cooking together, then there’s always takeout options.
Lit the best candles you have, dim the lights, add fairy lights in the background, play soft music and enjoy dinner without being in the public eye. Take out the best crockery and glassware you have for this date, and make it special.
Movie Night with Flavored Popcorn and Smores
If the idea of cooking yourself and enjoying dinner at home is too basic for you, then here’s another one. A movie night at home with popcorn and smores. You can set a movie night in your bedroom, living room, or out in the garden or rooftop. Pick your favorite movie that you can rewatch together or pick a new one. The creative thing you can do to make your movie night different and creative is make your own flavored popcorn. Try new fun flavored homemade popcorn with your partner. Experimenting with flavors is a fun activity to do together before the movie night. Another fun thing to do is to make smores at home. Preparing your own snacks for the movie night will give you both time to spend with each other thinking about things other than routine.
Paint, Read or DIY Together
Another simple and affordable idea for your at-home date night is to paint together, do a book club, or pick a DIY activity. Painting together can be fun and therapeutic at the same time, even if you don’t know how to paint at all. All you need is a canvas each, few paints and brushes, and an inspiration picture. You both can try to redo that picture in your own way. Or you can play a video of a painting drawn step by step and follow it. It’ll be fun to see what you and your partner end up with.
Book club is another idea suitable for readers and book nerds. If you and your partner enjoy reading, this is for you. Pick up your favorite books and exchange them. Read them for 30 minutes and then discuss what you liked or disliked.
Any other DIY activity such as blindfold cooking, doing a puzzle, assembling a home furniture piece from scratch, or painting your shoes, can be a good way to awaken the inner child and engage with your partner.
Game Night with Your Favorite Drinks
This is our favorite. Plan a game night with your favorite drinks. You can make your drinks yourself and experiment with fun flavors. Pick board games, card games or even video games and play together. This is the most fun out of all the ideas. Playing games and being competitive brings out the inner child and never fails to help couples interact and engage in fun banter.
Lay Under the Stars
Finally, the most simple and affordable out of all our ideas is this. Simply go on your roof, terrace or garden, lay a mat, and simply lay down with your significant other. This is the best and most relaxing idea for a date night. Engage in deep conversations, reminisce the past memories, revisit the happy ones and laugh on the mistakes, or plan your future adventures. Picture your life together. This is the sweetest thing a married couple can do – look at the future with each other.
Don’t forget the one rule that fits all these date night ideas, and that is to dress up. Even if you’re at home, dress up for your partner. And if all else fails, remember there’s always ‘Netflix and Chill’!
