Hey Karachiites! The hustle and bustle of Karachi can leave you yearning for a break. Unlike what everyone thinks, there are plenty of destinations near Karachi that can curb the cravings for a weekend getaway. And the best part? The best part is that they are really reasonable and most of the companies that offer these packages come with meals and accommodation.

What I think is that people tend not to take advantage of fun sights near Karachi is because of the beach. Or, most Pakistanis think that trips mean mountains and greenery only. The truth is that in terms of exploration, we need to broaden our horizons and start looking at fun and relaxing places instead of just Instagram places.

So here are my favorite choices for a quick weekend getaway near Karachi.

Hawke’s Bay Beach

Standing at a distance of 20km only, Hawke’s Bay Beach is one of the most popular beaches. On the shore there are plenty of huts that you can book for half a day or a full day. Some huts even offer you overnight stays and stays over the weekend. Hawke’s Bay Beaches are generally calm so the water may turn out to be your friend after all. However, you may have to look for the right spot to avoid the littering.

Hawke’s Bay Beaches also have horses and camels for rides along the beach.

When you book a hut, you may have to either pay extra for food and electricity. Or you can also find packages that help you get the best offers for your entire accommodation time.

Manora Island

At a distance of only 15 km from Karachi, the Manora Island is only a short boat ride away from Karachi. Manora has plenty of history and natural beauty to make it worth your trip. The boat ride itself is absolutely elite and more enjoyable with family. The Manora Lighthouse, St. Paul’s Church, and such landmarks makes it even picturesque.

Manora also has plenty of beaches that are more private than the ones you will find nearer to Karachi. You may also find places to rent for private beaches. Moreover, even if you go to the public beaches, you may find some more serenity than usual.

Local cuisines in Manora include fresh seafood. These are prepared in the local style which typically enhances taste.

Accommodation in Manora is limited with guest houses and some rest houses available. Perhaps this is the reason why day trips are more common and make more sense.

Keenjhar Lake (Kalri Lake)

36 km for Thatta and 122 km from Karachi is where you will find the largest artificial freshwater lake in Pakistan called the Keenjhar Jheel or the Kalri Lake. The lake is artificially made by the union of the Sonehri and Keenjhar. The lake is the main source of freshwater for the people of Thatta.

For anyone looking to connect with nature and serenity, Kalri lake offers you a peaceful retreat. Activities over there include boating, fishing, and even bird watching. The shallow parts of the lake are good for a quick swim as well. However, authorities have set tight regulations for swimming areas because of carelessness of the vacationers.

The Keenjhar Lake Resort area offers comfortable accommodations and resorts made in a symmetrical fashion. These are accommodated with modern amenities and are family-friendly. Going there for the weekend is definite. However, you can also book the resorts for a full day.

Mubarak Village

A quaint fishing village 30 km near Karachi is Mubarak Village. The waters of Mubarak Village are turquoise bordered with a rugged coastline. In recent years, this place has become slightly more popular. However, it is still not populous enough to be annoying.

Activities such as snorkeling and scuba diving are ideal over there to explore the underwater. Some vendors also offer underwater photography for a lasting memory. You can also join the local fishermen to enjoy a fishing experience and learn about their unique culture.

The accommodation in Mubarak Village is limited. This is why it is recommended to take a day trip from Karachi.

Gorakh Hill Station

The Murree of Sindh, the highest point of Sindh, 400 km away from Karachi stand high and proud are the Gorakh Hill Stations. If you want to escape from the heat of Sindh, then Gorakh is your place to stay.

Located in the Kirthar Mountain Range, it provides a cool and pleasant climate, making it a perfect retreat during the hot summer months. In fact, if you want to witness snowfall in Sindh then this is the place to be.

Now be notified that the ride to Gorakh is a long one but it is worth it. Driving all the way to the foot of the hill station you will see the Wahi Pandi Valley. From there, you have 4×4 jeeps that take you on the top. The rough terrain is slightly scary but fun if you are with friends. Going up takes you about 4 hours and coming down takes about an hour and a half.

From the Gorakh Hill Station, you can enjoy an easy but beautiful trek to the zero point – which is officially the highest point of Sindh. The hill station also offers camping, stargazing, and sometimes tour guides will also offer concerts from local bands to add bonfire and music.

There are government rest houses and a few private guest houses available. The accommodations are basic but comfortable with basic amenities. However, most people prefer staying under a tent.

Churna Island

A small inhabited island near Mubarak Village is Churna Island which stands at 60 km away from Karachi. For underwater explorers and enthusiasts this place is a heaven. The waters are filled with marine life and coral reefs.

Most groups offer Scuba Diving and Snorkeling packages with underwater photography. These experiences are surreal!

You can also enjoy jet skiing and cliff diving for an added boost of adrenaline. And if you want to enjoy something more calm, then you can enjoy a quiet fishing trip.

Churna island is not an island of rest. It’s like a huge hill. There are no accommodations available. However, tour operators accommodate you for necessary things for a comfortable day trip.

Ranikot Fort

One of the world’s largest forts is located just 300 km from Karachi. It is located in the Jamshoro Area of Sindh. The fort itself is a Marvel where you can go back in time and peek into the rich history of the region. Go with the right guide and you will find ample information about history.

Apart from basic photography and picnicking, you can enjoy exploring the fort. Seeing the significance, scale, and so much more, this is a sight for sore eyes.

The nearby town of Sann offers basic guesthouses. They are good for a comfortable overnight stay with all basic necessities.

Kirthar National Park

The third largest national park of Pakistan is situated in the Kirthar Mountains in Jamshoro Sindh about 160 km from Karachi.

Kirthar National Park is a huge place for protected wilderness. This park offers animal enthusiasts an opportunity to explore the diverse flora and fauna of the region. The park is home to a variety of animals, including deer, gazelles, and even leopards.

For activities you can spot various animals in their natural habitat. You will find guided safaris that help see the wildlife up close.

You will also find that there are several trails within the park for hikers of almost all levels. The view from the top is mind taking. To make your experience even better, you can camp under the stars. The camping facilities are basic and bring you very close to nature.

Accommodation within the park is limited to basic rest houses. However, you will find that these rest houses provide all necessary amenities for a comfortable stay.

Pir Ghaib Waterfall

In Balochistan, 380 km from Karachi, located in the Bolan Valley you will find an underrated and hidden gem. The Pir Ghaib Waterfall is a serene escape from city life with a view of the beautiful natural waterfall. The name “Pir Ghaib” means “Invisible Saint,” and the area is steeped in local legends and folklore.

The natural pool at the base of the waterfall is a great place to enjoy some swimming or splash time with the family. The water is clean, blue, and majestic to say the least.

Surrounding the waterfalls are scenic trails for hikes. The top and trails offer views of the surrounding landscape which are very romantic. When you are up there, don’t forget to take pictures where you can capture the beauty of the cascading waters and lush greenery.

Near the waterfall, there are some basic camping facilities. The amenities are limited. However, the camping provides an immersive experience in the natural beauty of the area.

Makli Necropolis and Thatta

The UNESCO world heritage site, Makli, is one of the world’s largest funerary sites in the world. This place is only about a 100 km away from Karachi.

The historic city of Thatta is nearby that helps peek into the rich culture and architectural heritage of Sindh. The area is a treasure trove for history enthusiasts and those interested in architecture.

The huge Makli Necropolis is a place to wander through the millennia old tombs and mausoleums. With the right tour guide, you can get a fascinating insight into the history and culture of the region.

To see the Mughal Era Architectural marvels, you do not need to go to India or Lahore. The Shah Jahan Mosque is located with its stunning tile ork and intricate patterns engraved from the Mughal Era.

For accommodations, you will find various guesthouses and small hotels in Thatta. These accommodations offer comfortable stays with all necessary amenities. Don’t forget to enjoy the  traditional Sindhi dishes in Thatta. The local cuisine is rich in flavor and offers a unique culinary experience.

Quick tips for Weekend Getaways from Karachi

Out of the several places we have mentioned, some offer night stays, some offer weekend stays, and some are day trips. Regardless of where you choose to go, keep a few of these things in mind to be more efficient.

  1. Plan ahead: Weekend Getaway places can get crowded especially in season. Ensure you book all your accommodations in advance and plan activities as much in advance as possible. Also skim through tour operations that give you full packages.
  2. Travel light: No matter where you go, travel light. Pack essentials only. If you do not use a foot cream every night in the city, you will not be able to get there too. Do not take random stuff to be cool. Just pack light to be more hassle-free.
  3. When in Rome: No matter where you go, ensure to respect the culture and the dressing. Be mindful of what may offend the locals and be neutral. Also respect the places and avoid littering and doing anything to harm the sites.
