Summers are here and so are vacations. Parents’ biggest concern is looking for summer activities that would keep their kids engaged and entertained. Many kids end up having more screen time or getting more aggressive or hyper due to the lack of activities. The tip is to plan and list activities to do with kids over the summer break. If you’re a parent looking for fun and easy activities to add to your list, you’ve landed at the right place.

We have gathered several fun indoor summer activities for those parents who don’t want to or can’t afford to take kids out for summer activities. Indoor activities, however, do require patience and attention. But trust me, you’ll find something from here that your kids will love doing. Let’s dive in.

Cooking and Baking

Cooking and baking are a great life skill that you can teach your kids over the summer break and also keep them engaged. Many kids may not find it interesting at first, so you can make it fun and interesting. For example, start with a basic cookie decorating kit where kids use cream to decorate their cookies. Another example is to give the kids ingredients to assemble their own sandwiches according to their liking. Start with these simple ideas and then move forward depending on what the kids like.

Visionary Board for the Upcoming School Year

A visionary board brings together your ideas and goals for a particular project or milestone. A great activity for kids would be to create a visionary board for their upcoming school year. This could be done digitally or otherwise. This would allow kids to put down their vision for their year including their academic milestones, such as learning the mathematics tables by heart, or they could be extra-curricular milestones such as learning to play basketball or swim. You can make this activity fun for the kids by making it a picturesque board and asking kids to add their creativity.

Virtual Summer Camp

If you are unable to register your kids in an actual summer camp or don’t have any close to your home, try finding a virtual summer camp. Virtual summer camps have become common after COVID-19 and are here to stay. They are convenient and accessible for all children. You can simply search online and choose a virtual summer camp that suits your child’s age and interests. The best part about virtual summer camps is that you can also select an international camp where kids can get to talk and interact with children from all over the globe. This would be good for the child’s cognitive development.

Scrapbook for Summer Activities

Whether it’s going to the mall or meeting friends, get your child to maintain a summer scrapbook. This scrapbook could include all the activities your child does in this summer along with the pictures or drawings. You can ask them to decorate it using stickers and colored pens or markers. You can motivate your child by saying that they can show this scrapbook to their friends once school reopens. Moreover, in order to motivate the child even more, get in touch with some of their school friends’ moms and get them to do the same so the children can share this book with each other in school after vacations.

Complete a 1000-piece Jigsaw Puzzle

Did you know that jigsaw puzzles are actually great for children’s cognitive and problem-solving skills? Pick a 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle and get your kids to solve it individually. This should keep them busy for about a week, depending on their ages.

Plant a Mini Garden

Planting is always a fun activity for kids. For this summer, give your children a project to plant a mini garden and take care of it. You can start by taking them to a nursery and getting them in touch with a gardener who can give them knowledge about summer plants. Next, you can assign them each one or two plants that they need to take care of by themselves. Take a flat pot where you can plant all the plants and create a mini garden. They can water their plants every day. To bring it up a notch, you can ask your kids to decorate the mini garden using painted pebbles, small white stones, small umbrellas as shades, etc.

Water Activities

Start by investing in a big pool, if you have the space. Use your garden, porch, or terrace space to set up a water activities area for the kids. You can also invite other kids from school or the neighborhood and engage the children for at least a couple of hours every 3rd or 4th day. Water activities are fun and time-consuming, keeping the kids busy for a long time. You can plan water-related games such as a water balloon fight.

Finish a Book

The best and most evergreen indoor activity for kids is to assign them a book to finish with a significant number of pages. In fact, if your children are older, you can assign them to finish multiple books in their summer vacations. If your children aren’t into reading, you can motivate them by offering a treat, a day out, or anything else that they like. Such rewards tend to motivate children and help them build healthy hobbies at the same time. Remember to ask a few questions from the book in the end to make sure your child has read it completely.

Conclusion

Indoor summer activities are not just for kids but also for parents, especially mothers if they are at home with kids all day. Try to incorporate fun for yourself too so you can enjoy and engage with your children and spend quality time together.  You can also look up ways to engage children in self-play and independent activities. Remember, happy you, happy children.
