We all know the basics of skincare – cleanser, toner, moisturizer! This is the starter pack of any skincare routine. But is it enough? Oftentimes, no. Many factors such as age, lifestyle changes, stress, busy routine, and even weather, affect the way our skin behaves. In fact, the climate of South Asia is so hot that skin conditions such as acne outbreaks, scarring, hyperpigmentation, dermatitis, inflammation, etc.

The first step towards taking care of our skin is to establish a skincare routine. However, the daily skincare routine differs in summer and winter.

Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen!

Let’s talk about this! We all know how important sunscreen is and yet it is the most easily forgotten item. Sunscreen adds a layer on our skin to protect from UVA and UVB rays, which can be extremely harmful for the skin. The harsh effects range from premature aging, wrinkles, skin spotting and go as far as melanoma and skin cancer.

Always pick a sunscreen with SPF 30 or above. Wear sunscreen even when you are indoors during daytime in summer. Also, ensure that your sunscreen says ‘broad spectrum protection’ – it means the sunscreen protects your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Do not forget to protect your lips and body from the sun too. Apply sunscreen to your lips, hands, and feet too.

Remember to apply and reapply your sunscreen multiple times, especially when outdoors. This is more than 50% of your summer skincare routine.

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated in summers is extremely essential for the body, mind, and of course, skin. Most of the skin dullness in summers is due to internal and external dehydration. Its important to drink lots of water so the skin feels hydrated and fresh. Using a hydrating face mask at least once a week can help keep the skin fresh and prevent from dullness and damage. You can also use a facial mist with a refreshing scent to freshen your skin when outdoors. Many local brands have introduced facial mists for summers with flavors such as watermelon, cucumber, rose, and others. Use a facial mist at the end of your nighttime skincare routine and you’ll feel a refreshing change.

Exfoliation

Another important part of the skincare routine in summers is exfoliation. This step is specially for you if you go out at least 3 times a week. Pick a gentle facial scrub to exfoliate and remove excess oil and dirt from your skin. This should be done at least twice a week for best results. Also remember to choose a scrub according to your skin type and suitability. Make sure to massage gently in circular motion on your face and neck. Don’t skip the lips!

Facial Steaming

Facial steaming can be a perfect addition to your skincare routine, especially in summers. It is just as it sounds, steaming your face with steam produced by heated water. It is a great way of hydrating your skin, unclogging the pores and softening your skin. It’s a simple technique but still a fairly new concept. Facial steaming can be done at home too by simply boiling water, pouring it into a bowl, leaning over the bowl and that’s it! However, the right technique is all about the amount of steam you get on your face and the timing. If you want to make it easier, invest in a facial steamer. You won’t regret it.

Facial steaming purges unwanted substances from the skin, helps fight acne, increases circulation, hydrates, and helps you feel fresh after a hot summer day.

Include Antioxidants in Skincare

Antioxidant skincare products are the best to prevent environmental damage to the skin. They protect the skin from pollutants and boost collagen. The good news is that such skincare products with antioxidants are now produced by local brands at reasonable prices. Some of the antioxidants that you need this summer are vitamin C, vitamin E, Vitamin A (also known as retinol), niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid. Each type of antioxidant is used as per the needs and requirements of the skin. The guidelines are usually mentioned on the product so be sure to know which product to use in the day and which to use at night. Out of all the mentioned above, Vitamin C is the best and highly recommended antioxidant for summers as it helps combat sun skin damage.

Fresh Food, Fresh Skin

You are what you eat. Yes, it’s time to implement that. Now that summer is approaching, all the summer goodness is coming with it too. Fresh fruits, juices, and salads are the best foods to incorporate into your diet if you want your skin to look fresh. Summer fruits such as watermelons, grapes, plums, apricots, and tomatoes are the best for your skin. Furthermore, fresh juices such as watermelon juice, peach or rose lemonade, or coconut water help flush out toxins from your body and result in fresher skin. Yogurt is also a good addition to your summer diet. A good old namkeen lassi can be pleasing to the tastebuds as well as the skin.

Stay Easy Breezy

It’s good for the skin as well as for the well-being to stay easy breezy in summer. Using lightweight fabrics to wear and lightweight makeup on the face is important to feel fresh. Wearing breathable clothes will keep you light and prevent excessive sweating, while breathable makeup will allow your skin to stay hydrated and unclogged. Heavy layers of makeup can hamper your skin’s ability to breathe and cause more dirt and heat to be trapped inside.
